In our society today, most of the new/latest technologies being put out there are being run by AI (Artificial intelligence). Ranging from music and video streaming to smart phones/laptops, cameras, autonomous cars etc. So basically there’s no escaping this concept, every corner you turn there’s always going to be a gadget or machine run by “AI”
What Is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence or AI as most people call it is a term that refers to variety of mannerisms or techniques by which a man created machine tries to copy or mimic the human behavior.
Artificial intelligence (AI), is also the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to set tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings such as human beings (According to the Britannica). A term that works hand in hand with the ”AI”, is the AI Assistant.
What is an AI assistant?
An AI assistant is a program that answer questions, provide information, and perform set tasks at your request. Artificial Intelligence Assistants (AI) are most commonly thought of in terms of smartphones and smart home speakers, they can exist in a range of devices and will become common in XR glasses, home appliances, connected cars, and more.
Types Of Artificial Intelligence
We have three types of Artificial Intelligence namely;
- Reactive Artificial Intelligence
- Limited Memory Artificial Intelligence
- Theory Of Mind Artificial Intelligence
- Self Aware Artificial Intelligence
This type of ”AI” is what I will call garbage in garbage out ”AI”. In the sense that it only reacts to what it is given, it is programmed to produce a predictable output based on the input it is given. This type of ”AI” cannot learn actions or conceive of past or future. Examples of such “AI” include;
- Deep Blue, the chess-playing IBM supercomputer that bested world champion Garry Kasparov
- Spam filters for our email that keep promotions and phishing attempts out of our inboxes
- The Netflix recommendation engine
Limited Memory AI:
This is the most widely used “AI” today in the world. This “AI” uses pre-programmed information, historical events and past experiential data to make predictions and build experiential knowledge by observing this past data.
Theory Of Mind AI:
Here the “AI” is programmed to truly mimic the human behavior. The “AI” here can hold meaningful conversations and also emotionally intelligent. With this type of AI, machines will acquire true decision-making capabilities that are similar to humans. Machines with theory of mind AI will be able to understand and remember emotions, then adjust behavior based on those emotions as they interact with people. A very typical example of this “AI” is the “SIRI” that the APPLE industry uses on their smart phones.
Self Aware AI:
This is The most advanced type of artificial intelligence . When machines can be aware of their own emotions, as well as the emotions of others around them, they will have a level of consciousness and intelligence similar to human beings. This type of AI will have desires, needs, and emotions as well. Sadly This particular type of “AI” has not been developed yet, the algorithms and hardware needed to develop this is non-existent.
Classifications Of Artificial Intelligence
“AI” is classified based on their capabilities and stages where in they can evolve. This classifications are listed below;
This is made out to be the peak of “AI”. Machines with this “AI” Will be able to completely mimic the complex human emotions and even surpass human intelligent. It will also be able to make rational decisions and even have it own ideology.
Narrow Artificial Intelligence:
This “AI” also known as weak “AI”, is developed mainly to focus and execute a single task extremely well. Examples;
- Cars with auto pilot
- Goggle search
Artificial General Intelligence:
Also known as strong “AI”, this “AI” has the general human Intelligence as the name implies. It is the kind of “AI” used in movies.
Advantages Of Artificial Intelligence
- Makes life easier
- Improved time rate of tasks completion
- Used in the Medical Sciences, to improve the chances of saving a life.
- Used in the transportation industry, especially travelling by air with improved navigation systems and maps.
- Used in the banking system to complete online transactions and also used to complete day to day tasks in the bank.
- Used in the gaming and entertainment industry, e.g the Xbox and PES Consoles. Etc.
Disadvantages of AI In Daily Life
The requirements of creating an AI technology is very expensive. It requires plenty of time and resources and can cost a huge deal of money. AI also needs to operate on the latest hardware and software to stay updated and meet the latest requirements, thus making it quite costly.
A big disadvantage of AI is that it cannot learn to think outside the box. AI is capable of learning over time with pre-fed data and past experiences, but cannot be creative in its approach.
One application of artificial intelligence is a robot, which is displacing occupations and increasing unemployment (in a few cases). Therefore, some claim that there is always a chance of unemployment as a result of chatbots and robots replacing humans.
Ethics and morality are important human features that can be difficult to incorporate into an AI. The rapid progress of AI has raised a number of concerns that one day, AI will grow uncontrollably, and eventually wipe out humanity. This moment is referred to as the AI singularity.
When it all boils down to it AI is just a machine it can’t feel emotions such as; anger, love etc.
Humans cannot develop artificial intelligence because it is a technology based on pre-loaded facts and experience. AI is proficient at repeatedly carrying out the same task, but if we want any adjustments or improvements, we must manually alter the codes.

- Machine learning is how a computer system develops its intelligence by using algorithms and statistical models to analyze and draw inferences from patterns in data.
N/B: One way to train a computer to mimic human reasoning is to use a neural network, which is a series of algorithms that are modeled after the human brain
